The Black Apollo of Science refers to the prominent African American biologist, Ernest Everett Just, who made significant contributions to the field of marine biology and cell development during the early 20th century. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Just faced numerous racial obstacles in his career, but he remained committed to his research and earned international acclaim for his work. He published more than 50 papers and co-authored a book on cell biology. In recognition of his contributions, Just was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1944. His legacy has inspired generations of African American scientists and scholars.
